Call for Submissions: ZJE “Microscopy Moments” Scientific Image Competition

Using the microscope as a medium to explore the beauty of the micro-world; through research as a path to pursue light and progress. There is no shortcut to scientific research. The microscopic world hides unknown mysteries, and macro exploration carries the power to move forward. Every scientific image marks the perseverance and exploration of researchers; every ray of light engraves awe and passion for science. To build a platform for communication and exhibition, stimulate innovation vitality, promote interdisciplinary integration, and encourage active exploration of the micro-world, Zhejiang UniversityUniversity of Edinburgh Institute (ZJE) hereby launches the Scientific Image Competition. All teachers and students of the International Campus are sincerely welcome to participate, capture scientific moments, and interpret the beauty of research through images.

2. Eligibility：All teachers and students of the International Campus

3. Submission Categories & Requirements 

Two categories are open for submission: Scientific Images and ZJE Core Facility Logo Design. 

(1) Scientific Images 

• Originality: Submissions must be original and created by the participant. Each participant may submit up to 2 works. Collaborative works (max 3 authors) must declare all authors and obtain consent. 

• Content: Research-related images including but not limited to microscopic images (optical, electron, confocal, etc.), Western Blot, spectra, chromatograms, cell culture images, experimental setup images. 

• Format: BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF; 3D videos in AVI. File size > 500 kB; resolution ≥ 300 dpi.

• Description: A completed registration form is required, including title, imaging technique, sample type, parameters, scientific significance or creative concept.

• Editing: Minor adjustments (contrast, sharpening, color, pseudo-color) are allowed. Compositing or excessive alteration is prohibited. Both original and edited versions must be submitted if modified. 

(2) ZJE Core Facility Logo Design

• Concept: Reflect the platform’s research service functions; embody innovation, collaboration, sharing; match scientific research style.

• Requirements: Original design; plagiarism is strictly forbidden. AI assistance is allowed but must be clearly declared; full AI-generated designs are not accepted. Logo shall be concise, recognizable, and artistic. Format: JPEG/PNG; resolution ≥ 300 dpi. 

• Description: A completed design registration form is required, including concept, inspiration, and AI usage details (if applicable). 

4. Schedule

• Submission Period: May 6 – May 31, 2026

• Review & Result Announcement: June 1 – June 23, 2026

• Award Ceremony & Exhibition: June 25 – September 30, 2026

Note: Late or incomplete submissions will be deemed invalid. No extensions will be granted.

5. Submission Method

1. Materials: Submission file + signed and scanned registration form.

6. Review Process & Criteria

(1) Process

1. Preliminary screening: Verify originality, compliance, and eligibility. 

 2. Final evaluation: 70% expert review + 30% public voting. 

 3. Popular Vote Award: Based solely on public voting.

(2) Criteria

• Scientific Images: Innovation 30%, Scientificity 30%, Artistry 20%, Technicality 20%. 

• Logo Design: Creativity 40%, Relevance 30%, Artistry 20%, Practicality 10%.

7. Awards

• First Prize (1): ¥800 + Certificate 

• Second Prize (2): ¥600 + Certificate
